Workers Will Become Better Skilled Through Understanding Between Staffordshire University and Unity the Union

(PRWeb UK) November 4, 2010

CERAMICS and other industry workers across North Staffordshire are set to benefit from a new partnership between Staffordshire University and Unity the Union.

The Stoke-on-Trent based union has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University to provide learning opportunities for its 5,000 members.

The Understanding is designed to give workers the chance to gain new skills and qualifications as well as develop their career options through education and training programmes.

Paul Richards, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Staffordshire University, said: “Staffordshire University is committed to offering work-based learning and professional development to organisations locally, regionally and nationally.

“Working alongside Unity the Union Learning Representatives, the University will offer a range of learning and teaching opportunities to workers in North Staffordshire.

“This, we hope, will help meet the skills needs of North Staffordshire’s workforce and play a vital role in the economic regeneration of the region.”

Geoff Bagnall, Unity General Secretary, said: “By signing the Memorandum of Understanding with Staffordshire University we are highlighting our commitment to higher education.

“This partnership will bring real and increasing benefits to our members as the manufacturing industry moves forwards, using even higher levels of skills and technology. I am sure that the relationship will continue to develop for many years to come.”

At a recent event to celebrate the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, the General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Brendan Barber, praised the work of both Staffordshire University and Unity.

He said: “I applaud the excellent work Unity is doing with Staffordshire University to help members access new opportunities in higher education. We need to replicate this right across the movement.

“We need to improve learning pathways – because we know that once workers get the learning bug, they want to go onwards and upwards.”
