Sloan-C Honors Excellence in Online Teaching and Learning

The Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C), an association of individuals, institutions and organizations of higher education engaged in online learning, will present its 2011 Awards at the 17th Annual International Conference on Online Learning: Online Learning, Teaching, and Research in the New Media Ecology, in Orlando, Florida, Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011.

Online learning has greatly progressed since 1992 when the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation began giving grants to institutions for online learning initiatives.

“The investments made in online learning have not only increased access to higher education, but now are actually demonstrating improvement to the quality of higher education as a whole,” said Meg Benke, president of Sloan-C and Provost of SUNY Empire State College. “Our watchwords of quality, scale and breadth are epitomized by individuals and institutions we honor this year.”

Burks Oakley II, Chair of the Awards Committee, added, “The 2011 recipients all have demonstrated exceptional leadership and real success in advancing online education.”

The recipients of the 2011 Sloan-C Awards are:


Ralph E. Gomory Award for Quality Online Education: University of Massachusetts Lowell
A. Frank Mayadas Leadership Award: Joel L. Hartman, University of Central Florida
Outstanding Achievement in Online Education by an Individual: Wayne D. Smutz, Pennsylvania State University World Campus
Excellence in Online Teaching: Ellen B. Bremen, Highline Community College
Excellence in Online Teaching: Michael R. Cheney, University of Illinois Springfield
Excellence in Faculty Development for Online Teaching: SUNY Empire State College
Outstanding Online Program: Cyber Security Program, Polytechnic Institute of New York University
Excellence in Institution-Wide Online Education: Ryerson University
Excellence in Institution-Wide Online Education: Pennsylvania State University World Campus

The Sloan-C Excellence in Online Teaching and Learning Awards Selection Committee for 2011 was comprised of Carla Bradley, Ozarks Technical Community College; D. Randy Garrison, University of Calgary (2009 Award for Outstanding Achievement in Online Education by an Individual); Robbie Kendall-Melton, Tennessee Board of Regents and Sloan-C Board of Directors; Gary E. Miller, Pennsylvania State University (2008 Award for Outstanding Achievement in Online Education by an Individual); Jacqueline F. Moloney (2009 Award for Outstanding Achievement in Online Education by an Individual); Burks Oakley II (non-voting chair, 2003 Award for Outstanding Achievement in Online Education by an Individual); Anthony G. Picciano, Hunter College (2010 Award for Outstanding Achievement in Online Education by an Individual); and Susan J. Wegmann, University of Central Florida (2009 Award for Excellence in Online Teaching).
